What to Expect from Fasting and Prayer

Fasting & Prayer for Breakthrough – Lesson 1

Introduction

In Matthew 6, Jesus provided the pattern by which each of us, as children of God, is to live.  This pattern addresses 3 specific acts that every Christian is to engage in—giving, fasting and prayer.

What is Prayer?

Prayer is, simply, communication to God.

  1. Prayer is talking to God
  2. It is direct communication with God.

Prayer is NOT the expressing of our wish for God to yield to our petition and fill up our selfish desire.

Prayer is NOT a forcing of the Lord to change His Will and perform what He is unwilling to do.

  1. The goal of prayer is the union of the believer’s thought with the will of God.
  2. Prayer is a force that makes needed power available to do a thing.  It empowers.

James 5:16, AMPC:  The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].

The key to, both, Natural and Spiritual Breakthrough is “Asking According to His Will” or “Asking in Faith.”

Importance of Prayer

Nothing happens in the earth unless one prays.

  1. The life of the Church is the highest life, and its office is to pray.
  2. God shapes the world by prayer.

The more praying there is in the world, the better the world will be and the mightier the forces are against evil everywhere.

  1. Prayer acknowledges to God that the answer is beyond your human ability.  And unless, you, God hear and answer I am without hope.
  2. Charles Spurgeon is quoted as saying, “We must remember that the goal of prayer is the ear of God.  Unless that is gained, the prayer has utterly failed. “

What is fasting?

Fasting is NOT merely going without food for a period of time.
Fasting is NOT something done by a bunch of fanatics and is not limited to ministers or special occasions.

  1. Stated simply, biblical fasting is refraining from food for a spiritual purpose.
  2. Pastor Jentzen Franklin states in his book, Fasting, “Fasting brings one into a deeper, more intimate, and powerful relationship with the Lord.

Fasting should be normal part of a relationship with God.

  1. When you remove food from your diet for a number of days, your spirit becomes uncluttered by the things of this world and you become amazingly sensitive to the things of God and His Voice.
  2. Fasting deprives the flesh and strengthens the spirit.
  3. Fasting releases POWER.

Your spirit has to be positioned to overpower the opposing rule or influence in your members.  This allows you to have the resolve or strength to agree with God and obey what He has said.

Fasting doesn’t change situations as much as it, really, changes you.

Fasting overpowers the flesh and lets it know who the boss is!

Fasting yields the heart to a positions of greatest reception and response.

Why is all this important?

  1. Prayer and fasting coupled together is a lethal combination to the enemy.  And, it positions you for supernatural breakthrough!
  2. When you couple these acts together, Jesus makes reference in Matthew 17:20, that “…NOTHING shall be impossible to them.”
  3. It gives you discernment. Fasting can make it clear who is speaking and gives you the power to turn down the volume of the deceiver’s voice so you can hear God’s voice about His Will.
